Scholarship Programs and Opportunities

The Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts invites students whose declared major is in a College department and who meet the eligibility requirements to apply for any of the scholarships listed below. Scholarship awards are valuable for the contribution they make toward reducing a student's tuition expense and they are important for the recognition and honor they confer. These scholarships are made possible by the generous support of UMass alumni and by the Dean's Office. Awards are typically between $500 and $1,500.

You are encouraged to pay particular attention to the eligibility requirements. While some awards are open to students in any Humanities and Fine Arts field, others are intended for students in a particular discipline. Students seeking scholarship support are encouraged to investigate additional opportunities administered by some departments. If you have any questions, please send them to: chfadev@hfa.umass.edu.


THE FOLLOWING SCHOLARSHIPS ARE OPEN TO STUDENTS MAJORING IN ANY CHFA DEPARTMENT:


The William F. Field Alumni Scholars Program

The William F. Field Alumni Scholars Program was established in 1976 to recognize and honor 60 third-year students for their academic achievements at UMass Amherst. The program is named in honor of William F. Field, the University's first Dean of Students, for his outstanding support of academic excellence and his personal commitment to bringing out the best in every student. The Field Scholars Program is funded through the generous support of UMass Amherst alumni. Awards are $750. Prospective Field Scholars are identified by the Registrar's Office and recommended to the Dean by Departments. There is no student-initiated application process.

Eligibility requirements: Nominees must have a minimum of sixty (60) graded hours in residence at UMass Amherst (transfer credits are excluded) and have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average.



The College of Humanities and Fine Arts Scholarships

CHFA Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic merit and extracurricular achievements. They are made possible by the generous contributions of many alumni. Awards range between $500 and $2,500, with an average scholarship of $1,000.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be a current Sophomore, Junior, or first semester Senior; have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average; and have declared their major in a College of Humanities and Fine Arts department.



The Class of 1945 Merit Scholarship

The Class of 1945 Scholarship was established in 1997 and is supported by class members' generous contributions. The award is approximately $700.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be a current Sophomore, Junior, or first semester Senior; have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average; and have declared their major in a College of Humanities and Fine Arts department. Preference will be given to students who are members of the Marching Band.



The Henry and Jean Hall Humanities and Fine Arts Scholarship

The generosity of Henry and Jean Hall led to establishment of this scholarship, which is an expression of their interest in and affection for UMass Amherst. The award is approximately $1,500.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be a current Sophomore, Junior, or first semester Senior; have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average; have declared their major in a College of Humanities and Fine Arts department; and have demonstrated financial need.



The Robert and Serena Perlman Scholarships

Perlman Scholarships support students who have demonstrated leadership potential and an entrepreneurial spirit. These scholarships are open to all CHFA undergraduate majors and are made possible by the support of Robert and Serena Perlman.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be a current Sophomore, Junior, or first semester Senior and have declared their major in a College of Humanities and Fine Arts department.



The Class of 1976 Humanities Scholarship for Graduate Study

The Class of 1976 Humanities Scholarship was created during its Tenth Reunion Fund Drive (1985-1986) and established in 1989. It is applied toward the tuition of a student who will continue his or her education as a Graduate Degree candidate in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The award is approximately $1,500.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be a graduating senior in good academic standing who will begin work toward a graduate degree a College of Humanities and Fine Arts department. Award recipients are required to provide evidence of an accepted offer of admission.



The Robert and Serena Perlman Internship Stipends

Perlman Internship Stipends provide financial support to students who have been selected to fill an internship position. The funds may be used to cover expenses associated with the internship or to provide a measure of compensation if the internship is unpaid.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must have declared their major in a College of Humanities and Fine Arts department. Award recipients are required to provide evidence of an accepted internship offer.


THE FOLLOWING SCHOLARSHIPS ARE OPEN TO STUDENTS MAJORING IN SELECTED DEPARTMENTS:


The Class of 1933 Scholarship

The Class of 1933 Scholarships are awarded to students majoring in a foreign language. They are funded by an endowment created by the Class of 1933 in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Awards are approximately $800.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be a current Junior or first semester Senior, have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, and be majoring in foreign language on of the languages taught in the department of Languages, Literature, and Culture.



The Frank Prentice Rand Scholarship

The Frank Prentice Rand Scholarship is made possible by the 50th Reunion gift of the Class of 1924. It is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Fine Arts or Drama. The award is approximately $1,250.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be in good academic standing and majoring in or a graduate student in Fine Arts or Drama.



The Luise Bronner Scholarship

The Luise Bronner Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in a foreign language. It is made possible by an endowment established by the estate of Luise Bronner and is approximately $2,500.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average and be majoring in a foreign language one of the languages taught in the Deparment of Languages, Literature, and Culture.
